UN High Commissioner for Refugees Mr Filippo Grandi visited U Thant House and met with Dr. Thant Myint-U. Mr. Grandi also met with twenty other invited Myanmar guests over lunch and an informal discussion on "Global Refugee Challenges". Mr. Grandi and Dr. Thant Myint-U have known each other since the summer of 1987. Mr. Grandi was then working for the NGO COERR in Thailand and Dr. Thant Myint-U was an intern with the UN's Border Relief Operation. They worked closely together for 3 months at the Site 2 Camp on the Thailand-Cambodia border. Guests included a mix of writers, scholars, heads of Myanmar civil society organizations, and Myanmar political leaders, all attending in their private capacity. Dr. Thant Myint-U said: "It's wonderful to see Filippo in Yangon. We've been good friends for a very long time. He's doing an excellent job as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and I'm honoured that he was able to visit U Thant House today. We've had a really interesting discussion, together with our other guests on refugee challenges around the world".
