2018 U Thant Memorial Lecture: 'Leadership and Shared Prosperity' by Dr. Noeleen Heyzer

In commemoration of U Thant’s 109th Birthday, former UN Under Secretary-General Dr Noeleen Heyzer today gave a memorial lecture ‘Leadership for Peace and Shared Prosperity’ at the U Thant House in Kamayut Township in Yangon.


Dr Noeleen Heyzer of Singapore is a member of the High-level Advisory Board on Mediation under the current UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Dr Heyzer is also a former UN Under Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and was the first woman to serve in that position. Under her leadership, UNESCAP focused on regional co-operation for a more resilient Asia-Pacific, founded on shared prosperity, social equity, and sustainable development.


This is the third lecture that U Thant House organised in memorial of U Thant, the third United Nations Secretary-General who was born in January 1909. About 150 people, including Union and Region Government Ministers and other leading figures from politics, business, civil society, as well as friends and family of U Thant attended the lecture which was followed by a short documentary screening on U Thant’s life and legacy.
